Supermarket Sweep

Today, as in the year 2012, supermarkets have to almost literally do back flips in order to attract customers. Some stores bring in entertainment, some put new spins on old tricks, and others have to continuously reinvent everything they do. Many places are taking full advantage of utilizing technology. Between coupon distribution, e-flyers, and even hand held shopping devices, supermarkets can target who they want, how they want, and when they want.  Technology is one of the best tools for stores to seek opportunities in influencing purchases. With the software that many supermarkets have available to them, supermarkets are able to find out what the customers really want. Technology can help track what customers visit the most online or look up the most online product wise to help create coupons for that product. Supermarkets can target certain types of customers (i.e. parents of newborns, large families, single person households, etc.) based off of what they learn about them online, a lot of which comes from surveys on websites or even through the supermarket’s rewards program. If there is a computer used, there is opportunity for the supermarket to better itself.

Supermarkets use more psychological tricks than we are aware of most of the time. The size of shopping carts have increased over the years. If a customer is using a shopping cart, they are more likely to purchase more since it can hold more. This is one of the many tricks that stores are using. Another is through price. By pricing products ending with odd numbers, customers believe they are getting a discount. If there are two different brands for a similar product and the prices are $3.99 and $4, the customer is more likely to think that $3.99 is a bigger deal and therefore buy that brand even though there is only a penny difference. Stores use this for a lot of their pricing techniques, not just in competitive brand pricing. This is also the case for any type of “deal” such as buy two get one free, ten for ten, etc. These techniques are ethical, as they are not harming their customers or pulling a bait and switch, it is just the nature of the job.

Supermarkets are much better at influencing consumers to buy products today than in the past. So much research has been done to help stores gain knowledge about hot to make more sales. Every study done can help teach supermarkets what to do and what not to do. Now, there are a lot more options for supermarkets in a small area and more of an ability to get further distances, so stores have to remain competitive and try to be the best. This will continue to only better the service that stores give to customers and the knowledge that they will continue to gain.

Super Markets Today
Super markets today do a lot to get their costumers to buy products in their stores. In the past years super markets have changed a lot. Every super market has more food than they have ever had. They are expanding their stores to put more food in with other things to. That one super market that has so much in it that it looks like a little village. Costumers find that to be awesome because its not just a super market it has a bunch of other things along with it. Like they have opera singers and free samples of new products. The super markets trick you into thinking that its really cheap and not expensive food just because a product could be cheap. Stop and shop has this scanner thing you can use when you enter the store and it tracks where the costumer goes. It also tells you what’s the most product you buy, for example every time you go into stop &shop and you scan a food product it will say that’s a product you buy all the time. They do this so that they can know what product gets sold the most and which ones don’t get sold. Super markets like to trick their costumers a lot. They made there cart sizes bigger than what they use to be just so they can get people to buy more food. This benefits the super markets a lot because they can now sell more than they use to. They make all the major food products that people buy at the back of the store so that when people come in to the grocery stores looking for those products they have to go through basically the whole store just to get to those products. They do this because people will see something that they want as there walking and then they will get that product so they end up buying more than they expected to buy. They also stack everything so they can look really good and that will make customers want to buy the products just because they look really good. Super markets are really good at tricking costumers and they are really good at keeping the business going. The super markets will probably keep increasing and keep coming up with crazy ideas to get more customers to come to the store.

Nick Van Winter

Nick Van Winter
In 2012 supermarkets are forced to use high technology and individualizing the customer experience in order to get customers to buy more and trying to tailor specific deals to customers who are in the store. Stores have their greatest opportunity to influence what a customer will buy by offering them deals on the food while they are in the store and making them think that it is really cheap so they have to buy it. Supermarkets have a lot of different techniques that they can use in order to catch the customer’s eye and get them to buy. They use techniques ranging from where they place the food on the rack, to moving food around the store, to lowering the price on something that might be going bad, to giving customers deals as they are walking through the store. All of these techniques serve a different purpose but I think the most effective out of all of them is putting the goods that people get the most in the furthest corner of the store. This forces people to walk all the way down the aisle and they are going to notice other foods so if u put other good food along the aisle than they are going to want to purchase those foods as well, thus bringing more income for the store. I believe that these techniques are definitely ethical because all they are doing is tempting people to buy more food but they aren’t forcing anybody to buy anything. If somebody can resist the temptation to buy the new food than they don’t even need to worry about it. Supermarkets are considerably better at getting customers to buy new things that they wouldn’t normally buy. By pricing the high volume products slightly higher and the low volume products lower than people are driven to try something that they wouldn’t normally try because it is so cheap. If it wasn’t as cheap than they could easily skip over it but since it is so cheap than the peoples eyes are driven towards it and they are more willing to try it because of how cheap it is. All of these techniques work well and everybody seems to buy it more.

In year 2012, the most important information for human being is healthy. So fruits, vegetables, diet meals will be one of the biggest part for 2012 most attract things for customs.

The best opportunities for getting peoples attention will be selling all the healthy products at the entrance of the store, so when customs walk into the market, the first thing they can see is whole lot of fresh fruit. Which get their attention of keeping on diet and eat healthy.

The psychological tricks will be they putting the fruit and the vegetable section at both entrance of the market and the checking out places, also usually they will provide a discount or bonus, so lots of the family host will be buying fruits for the whole family.

And also they pick really bright section, which make the fruit and vegetable looks brighter and better, and just like stop and shop, once in a while, they will water the vegetable to keep it look nice and really fresh, and keep the food soft and tasty.

And to manger a supermarket mush using techniques. Like the fruit and vegetable could making into salad which will be easier for the custom to eat it and saving lots of the time, and for other section, they will putting things together, like hot dogs at the frozen section, and right cross the hot dogs must be bread or hot dog buns.

Also they will hand out the self-check machine. It will save the customs lots of time and according to their shopping habit to provide them some discount on the things they always buy and showing more information to them.

The supermarkets using the webcam to look at customs' habits, then to organize the market and get better product line ups and make the sales goes up. Also in the past, it's really hard to find the price or something like that, now they provide machines all over the place to checking the price and to see how much you saved at shopping. And to join the membership, you get extra discount every time you shop, this is the market in the past does have.

And most we can see when you using a shopping cart, you will be lots of the stuff you don't even need, but just for fill up the cart, makes you shop more.

SuperMarket Life

It has came to a conclusion for me, we the people of the world are products of  every business in the world , the reason being that the way business go of doing research of the human to see what is more noticeable to the eye , or that it more noticed period from any of the competing products. The businesses of the world are more like the CEO’s of a world traded business and we are the employees of this business a profit for gain.
As a product of one of the biggest businesses in the world, the Supermarket, the supermarket is muti-billion dollar business they must change with time, to keep the hearts and money of the customers, and in the new year the businesses have made their supermarkets more like all-in-one store so that the customer doesn’t need to take their MONEY anywhere else but their stores. By doing such thing like putting the milk and dairy products in the corner of the store it makes the customer past thousands of products it’s a psychological trick in which the customer walks by the other products of the store and has them thinking about buying other products of the store. Also they’ve made more store sell food, in the sense like making cheeseburgers or selling food to eat; this brings in customers and also a new tactic. The fact that they have food being made in the stores for eating at the store but these aren’t just snacks they are bars of food like all you want from different countries sometimes this influential in the sense that it gets the customer to purchase more from the store they are becoming like a Wal-Mart in my eyes.
In reference to the supermarket getting smart in recent studies that the supermarkets have done themselves which track the customer throughout the store and it gives the market the most visited aisle so that they know how to better serve the customer while making a more of a buck.
Compared to supermarkets back in the day they are appealing more to the customer than to them self’s they are having more types of products. I think that they are ethical for what they are doing because think about it like this being the apple corporation they changed their computers for the customer they continue to change to be the best in at what they do to be the best.
