SUPERMARKETS

Supermarkets today use a number of things to attract customers and have grown to be one of the largest corporations that we know of today. One thing that supermarkets have begun to do to attract customers, is to try and convince you through ads that there is a big deal going on. These supermarkets show you that there is a deal going on with the milk and bread and then you think that everything inside the store is cheaper. The real deal is that they trick you into thinking that everything in the store is cheaper just because the major items are cheaper. Since they bring you in to believing that the store is cheaper than others they mark up the other items marginally, possibly only 5 to 10 cents. Another thing that supermarkets is changing is the actual design of the store, over the years they have gathered information through camera’s and other devices to track where you go inside the store. These devices have shown the supermarkets where the most viewed items are and what isles most people go down. Supermarkets have designed there store so that the customer has to go down almost every isle, therefore the customer sees more products that they may want to buy. Another change that the supermarkets have changed is the cart size. Research has been done and when people have a smaller cart they buy fewer items. The supermarkets have upgraded their cart sizes and therefore make you fill your cart up more. Some of these things I do not believe are ethical. I believe that it is wrong for the supermarkets to track our activity through the cards that they send out and through cameras. It is almost like a being stalked type of feeling and I believe it is wrong, it is a smart strategy on their part but as a customer I feel like it is wrong. Supermarkets have changed in the past years. Supermarkets have grown to be multibillion corporations and have gone from a local mom and pop typical grocery store to ten things in one place. Now in grocery stores you can find a full blown bakery, opera, prepared meals, as well as scan as you go shopping. I believe grocery stores will even begin to grow as time goes on and we will see progress in the future.
