Homework 8

Supermarkets are designed to display food that catches peoples eyes. By having bright colored fruit in the front of the store and putting certain foods at eye levels are ways of getting customers attention to that product. The designers of the stores have set them up in the best formation that causes people to have to walk down every isle. By walking down every isle people start picking up products that they don’t even need. Most people come to a super market to get a handful of things but end up leaving with more. That’s because the more appealing something is the more a person wants it. I think a business that is similar to the supermarket is a drug store. Cvs, Walgreens, and Rite aid are all examples of drug stores. Every time I go in to a drug store I always buy more then I intended to. Every Drug store I have gone into has the pharmacy located in the back of the store. They definitely do that on purpose so people pass every isle just to get to the pharmacy. Every time I go to pick up a prescription I end up buying something from the store. The way the store is set up is kind of like a grocery store it just has less food and more household goods. Not to mention it is a lot smaller. Some of the newer drug stores have isles that are curved and products that are placed in an irregular spot to grab people’s attention. This video relates to concepts we have talked about in class because it mentions changing something to get more peoples attention. When we talked about Coke and how corporate changed the shape of the bottle that relates to this video because after changing the shape Coca Colas product started selling more. Grocery stores are selling more because they changed the shape of their store. Competition makes it hard for stores to get business since there are so many drug stores. Changing the shape to make the store look better might attract more customers, but it also has to do with the price of the product.

  1. Erika this is a really good post. Your very organized with what you say. i agree with you about what you said the fruit being colorful and dragging customers in and to buy more food. I also agree with you when you say that when somethings appealing people will buy it. i know when I've seen something appealing i want to buy it and i know I don't need it. this is very well written good job.

  2. I thought that your blog post was well thought out and that you applied the concepts from supermarkets to drug stores. I agree with you in that businesses like CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid put use most of the same techniques and tricks that supermarkets do. I never really thought about why a business would put the pharmacy in the back, but you clearly explained that in here, saying it was like the milk or the other staple items and are strategically put into the back of the stores to require customers to walk through the entire store, therefore bypassing a series of products, before reaching their destination. The shape of the store definitely plays a key role in sales for both drugs stores and supermarkets. I like how you connected that back to the Coca Cola lesson. When Coke changed its packaging, it sold more of the product, just as stores do when they change the stores shaping, displays, or overall appearance.
