Supermarkets can be found everywhere in America. They are the powerhouse of the American population. If there were no supermarkets then there would be riots in the streets, people would have no idea what to do. Supermarkets are one of the biggest industries in the world. I have had experience working in supermarkets and they are a very complex place. They are very different from any other store you have ever been in. No matter what hour of the day it is the store is constantly being changed, and running.
To make these stores successful the first thing that they need to do is attract customers. The supermarket industry is one of the most competitive amongst businesses in America. To get customers to come back to their stores supermarkets do a lot of little things to help consumer enjoy the experience to the fullest. One thing they do is constantly play music throughout the store, it makes shopping less stressful and more enjoyable. Another thing they do is offer a lot of free samples to promote new items. As of recently they have also added things like salad bars and cafes so you can enjoy a nice meal as your shopping. And if you haven’t noticed a lot of the sections in grocery stores offer different lighting to make the products stick out more. All these things are marketing techniques to make you buy more products.
These stores also play with your mind quite a bit. Things are designed certain way to get in your head and control you as a shopper. Some psychological games are being played with us every time we enter a supermarket. For example milk is the most common product people need in a grocery store. It is purposely placed in the back corner of the store so that you pass by all the other products, making you more tempted to buy them. Also the isles and shopping carts are specifically designed to get you to buy more products. I would say that all these behaviors done by supermarkets are not necessarily ethical. Because in the end all they really want is our money yet it works.
