Coke Marketing

I don’t just love Coca Cola’s products, but also admire their marketing strategies. I can remember most of their ads from commercials on TV and in the theatres. After watching the ads it leaves me with a positive feeling and craving for a nice cold can of Coke. I went on YouTube and started to look up the most memorable commercials Coke has produced. The one I found made appreciate the Coca Cola Company even more. The title of this commercial is “Videogame”. This commercial grabs attention of every person, man or woman, young or old. This commercial aired in 2006 where a popular video game along with others ones were questioned to be too violent. Coke took this violent impression of the game Grand Theft Auto and turned it into the opposite image. In the game your character is a criminal that steals cars, fights random people, and sells drugs. So in the beginning of the commercial when it has the same video game effects and settings one would think the main character was going to be really violent. But as it progresses you find the character to be a nice guy. He goes around town handing everyone a Coke and ending in a huge happy musical number. A quote from the creative director, Sheena Brady, “I was working off of this optimistic [Coke] world and thinking about what's not happy in this world, what's a little darker. [And I thought] what would happen if you put Coke into this über-violent video-game setting?" Coke has a lot of hard competitors so they constantly have to market their products to overshadow the rest of the competition. They definitely did so with this ad which gives the audience a mix of emotions. These include hope, happiness, and love. Ultimately this is what the Coca Cola Company is trying to perceive its products as. This is a great marketing strategy and proves to work since Coke is still number one. This is just one of the many commercials that grabs the attention of the audience and leaves them smiling and wanting to go out and grab a Coke product.
