Family business are great types of business, they can accomplish a lot. I agree with hard work and dedication can transform into a great company one day with a little hard work. My father had the same attitude when he started LeBlanc Oil. Its great to see a small hometown company be a supplier to a huge store like Sports Authority. Advertising in this area is very difficult especially when you have the big Jonson and Johnson Company at local grocery stores and pharmacies. Advertising is defiantly a risk for a small company. "The goal is to use the medium that can reach your desired market most effectively and efficiently (p 433).” Custom artwork is a great way to put this company ahead of all its competitors. Also expanding the company by manufacturing their own ice packs will benefit the business in cost. First aid kits are needed everywhere, from schools to school busses to youth athletics and businesses. They are needed everywhere. Do you plan on taking over the company your father started that has been passed down? Mike became and entrepreneur by leaving his previous company to start his own. An entrepreneur is “ a Person who risks time and money to start and manage a business (p4).” One interesting point in your business interview was that Mike was able to start a business with machinery and customers. He already had reliable customers, which helps in starting a small family business. The other interesting point was one of his accomplishments. Sports Authority is a well know athletic distributor. It is a huge company with many locations. Mikes first aid kids will get distributed all over. This will help his company get his products out to different locations. Mike has a great idea about expanding his business to a bigger location with more employees. Also exporting might be a great idea with first aid kits. “ Exporting is selling products to another country (p 61).” The United States is the second largest exporting country. The attitude he held towards starting this company made it the company it is today. Custom Kits has my vote in first aid kits.
Nick, After viewing this presentation, my first response was wow this is an amazing business. Before I get into a full analysis of your power point, I want to point out that I was surprised that there were types of business like this out there; especially with major companies out there like the one you’ve mentioned Johnson and Johnsons. This is defiantly a big challenge but as you mentioned, I believe that your father is going about overcoming this the right way because he is starting from the bottom and working his way up. The overall design of the slide was a good idea; the only thing was the font size. I found it kind of hard to read some of the writings on the slide because of the color clashing and some of the font sizes being too small. Other than that and maybe one or two grammatical errors, this was a pretty solid presentation. The history of this company was very interesting. I wanted to know more like how exactly your grandfather started the business. And what prompted him to do it that way. There are just a few important pieces of information that was left out and I wanted to see more of. I believe you also mentioned that your grandfather sold the business to your father? How much did it cost your father? Other information would have been a great addition to this power point like what type of business is it, limited liability or something else? These are definitely some questions that would have been a great addition to the contents of your power point. I think it’s amazing that your father’s products were able to be placed in businesses like sports authority, because it is a well-known local company. One thing I was wondering though with that is where it is placed in a store like that. And do people choose your family’s package over Johnson and Johnsons? According to the information you gave regarding what type of help this product serves sounds to me like its used often and there are a lot of competitors so I like the fact that you talked about advertising because that is important in this case.
Nick,
