  1. Hey man great presentation! I think you really hit on some great points and provided a nice inside look into the small business world. Dennis did a great job of taking a talent and skill of his and turning it into a business and finding a way to turn over a profit from it. The way he went about it as well is very impressive to me. The idea that he was able to advertise and generate business is important but, what I think is more important is the way he did not just stop there. What I mean by this is he took advantage of this business and profit and took it and expanded his business. This risk of buying more equipment and the dump truck allowed him to take on and tackle bigger jobs thus, expanding his business and truly maximizing his profit. Another thing that he did that I think is important is that he hired help, mainly close friends but that is a major step to expanding a business. This also shows that is business was expanding when he needed extra help on certain jobs because it was to big for just one person. Another positive point of this kind of tree service and fire wood business is that there will always be a demand for it. As you mentioned people need wood to heat there houses and when oil prices go up his business has to blossom. On the other end of the spectrum if the weathers off and we have a warm winter like this past the profits must suffer greatly on the fire wood profit. I think he protects his situation well though because he has another source of income that being tree removal. With a warm winter like this last there were more trees falling down then I have seen in years. So if the winters warm or cold I think he sets himself up for success based on his business plan and the services he provides. I think its important to remember that in general basing a business thats as weather controlled as this is very risky but it is very clear that there is money to be made. All together I enjoyed your presentation good job.

  2. Matt the beginning of your power point reminded me of one of my best friends and how he got into landscaping. His father as well gave him some landscaping equipment and he never looked back. I was also very fortunate to enter the business with him as a side job. I learned a lot about landscaping and what it takes to succeed. Dennis idea of cutting down trees and then selling the wood as fire wood is genius. He's taking his job and turning the profits to benefit him to the fullest. The best thing about this type of job is like my friend Jon did and as dennis did, is if you need help you can always call one of your friends to help you with the work load and to make some money. The problem brought up about not making enough money selling fire wood because of in-climate weather is something I feel this and many other types of businesses have to go through. Luckily for him it is his own business and he was able to go out and get another job working for AT&T. Is there any skills he takes from his landscaping company and uses them at AT&T? I found it very interesting that he can file his milage in his taxes. That to me is huge because I'm sure he drives a good distance a day for his job sites. I have found from personal experience and seeing my friend Jon handle the promotion of his company the best way to put ads in papers and internet sources. Also something I found even better is when you are out at the job site people see your and your work and ask you on the spot for or about your business. I wonder if Dennis has had success with people asking him to cut trees down or about his fire wood? Has letting his friends work for him ruined any of there relationships and does he think of them any different? Also Matt have you ever done this type of job or have you considered it at all?

  3. Hey great presentation dude! I really liked how you discussed all of the major parts of his business including how he started and how he first got interested in his business. I never knew a lot of that about Dennis so I can tell that you really did a lot of research and got a lot of good facts from him. This was a very interesting business to read about because I know Dennis personally and I knew he had his own business but I never knew how it got started or anything. Also, I grew up close to him and I have spent a lot of time in his home town so I could definitely see how a business like his would thrive. I also greatly appreciated all of the talk about how his business got going and all of the steps he had to take in order to really build it and to do well. I think it is awesome that Dennis took a passion of his of being in the woods and cutting down fire wood and cutting it up and turned that into a job and a career and when he knows that he can’t do it himself, he has the smarts to call up a friend who will take it seriously enough in order to be a valuable asset to him. Also, the need of people to heat their houses in the fall and winter definitely help his company because they need somewhere to acquire the wood from and that’s what his company does. Also, the average person can’t remove trees from their own property so having a company that will remove the tree as well as chop it up and use it for firewood is combining all that people look for in a tree company. Overall this was a wonderful presentation because it discussed how the business started, what it required to keep it going, where it is at now, and what else the owner does. I think it was very important to talk about what else he does to make money because it makes it clear that there is not enough money in the one thing that he does. I thoroughly enjoyed this presentation.
