Precise Handyman Service

  1. Interviewing your grandfather must have been exciting, he must have felt honored. I thought it was interesting that he did not want to hire any more employees because he does not want to pay someone. The woman I interviewed also does not want any more employees to her business because she would have to pay them and because they do not know how to do things exactly how she likes. It is ironic because the textbook states: “As a business grows, it becomes impossible for an entrepreneur to oversee every detail, even by putting in 60 hours per week. This means hiring, training, and motivating employees is critical” (Nickels, McHugh & McHugh, 2010). Both your grandfather’s business and Amanda’s business (the woman I interviewed) are seemingly quite successful. I also found it interesting that Mr. Taylor puts a sign in the lawn in which he just did business in order to promote the company. I have always seen signs in lawns for political candidates, but not many for businesses. It is definitely unique and will let people see the intangible product before buying the service.
One thing that I learned from this presentation would be how much determination and dedication pays off. This business is greatly affected by the weather, which can make or break it. However, if someone is willing to take the risk of starting a business like this and following through with this, then they are very likely to be successful. I also came to realize the value of equipment in a business. There has to be back-up equipment just in case something breaks, or it is possible that you can lose the job. Equipment can be so expensive, but it is likely to break or die at some point, which can be quite a hassle in a handyman’s business. I also learned that there are a lot of opportunities with this type of business. Each season brings different needs, such as spring bringing lawn mowing and winter bringing plowing. This is one of the smartest businesses a person can go into, which may be why there is so much competition to Mr. Taylor’s business. The way to overcome this is just to strive to be the best and to work hard, which it is apparent is already happening in this business.

  3. My first impression of this presentation was "Wow, one hell of an inspiring piece", specially the ending, how the owner talks about persuing your goals and not giving up. Overall, I'd like to say you did a good job, Mario.
I bet the best part about this asignment for you was interviewing you grandfather. I think that's pretty cool, because i'm sure you also learned a lot just through that single interview. I also really like the details you give about this business, such as all the services offered, and all of the equipment needed/used. Definitly a bog plus for that. Also the overall design is eye-catching. I'm surpised that even though it's a small business, your grandfather doesn't have any employees. I do a lot of landscaping on my own as well, especially around my house or sometimes for other, and i know it sure can be challenging when you're working by yourself. However, I do agree with MR. Taylor that doing it all by yurself, is more profitable since you don't have to pay anybody for working with you.
Having mentioned all the positive things about your presentation, i have to throw a couple of negatives, just to balance it out. Two things that i have to point out is the fact that you should've icluded some pictures, such as with the entrepreneur. Another thing I have to point out is that I'd definitly like to see where exactly is this company located. It just adds a litle bit more overall value to the project, in my opinion.
As a whole, I really like your presentation, Mario. You did a good job, and if i was to grade you, you would receive an A fom me, especially for all the details. This presentation thaught me some valuable points about small businesses, and i have to say it also gives me a better idea of how such business, in this field of service is run. Just one last thing i thaught would be a really cool to add, and see in your presentation would be some prices that this company charges for specific services. But overall, good job, and i hope the success and effort will run in your family, and that you become succesfull, like your grandpa one day as well.

  4. Your grandfather’s business reminds me with my father’s business in which they started it from the ground up and were the only employees. It is a lot of work being the only one in the business but overtime it can be worth it. The good thing about being your own boss is that you get to control your own schedule. You also keep all the money to yourself. There is a lot of competition in the landscaping business and that is why promoting your business is important. I like how you grandfather promotes his business with business cards and putting a sign out on the lawn he did. Advertising is an important role in any business. It may cost some money to do but the plan is to get more customers that bring in more money. Your grandfather seems to have enough experience under his belt to attract more people to work for. Sometimes it pays off more to be the only guy working. Sure it is a lot of work to do but the rewards all go to you. I see a lot of money has to be put into the business by buying all the equipment. But since he is keeping all the money, he should have a good amount for new equipment. It is really smart that he works in seasons like summer and winter because he will be in work most of the year. I’m also impressed that your “Grandfather” is doing all this because it is a really tough job physically. I appreciate your grandfather for working so hard whatever age he is. I am sure a hard worker like that will be able to get new employees eventually to help him out and that he will get more work. One day he will be the big man running the business with employees. He is very smart for buying back up equipment. His plan for his business is very smart and well thought out. People looking for hiring other people in this business will be very impressed with your grandfather. They know that they can rely on him to get the job done with no problem at all.

    1. Hey Mario, I thought that this slide show was put together very nicely. What Leroy Taylor did was the definition of what an entrepreneur really is. As the book defines it an entrepreneur is a “Person who risks time and money to start and manage a business.” What Mr. Taylor did was defiantly risky. Being a sole proprietorship all the blame is on him if anything goes wrong. But as far as his choice of work was concerned I think that Mr. Taylor made a great decision. Why not start a business in the field that you are already experienced in. It makes sense to go with your strong suit.
The first thing that I found interesting about this article was the fact that your grandfather was willing to take the risk of starting a business all by himself with no one to help him. To me this is a bit of a stretch to take this kind of risk. Especially with a landscaping business, this type of business requires a lot of manual labor. With just one person doing it all it must be very difficult to keep up with all the work. But is
Something I learned from this is that if you put your mind to it you really can do anything you desire. If you’re good at something why not go for it. I found it interesting that Mr. Taylor focuses on expansion in the future. He hopes to one day expand his small company to a large company with a lot of equipment and employees. I hope that Mr. Taylor can one day reach his goal because a hard-working man like himself deserves it.
