    1. I found your presentation very entertaining Erika. I picked yours because I knew you would have something interesting to talk about. Your father’s interests and mine are very similar. I took a construction trades class in high school and I can relate to your fathers work completely. I love construction but it is a very hard occupation and tough on the body. I Respect his work ethics and courage to start his own business. He has been doing it since he was young so I’m assuming he is pretty skilled in his trade. Your father does roofing, siding, window installations and gutters. I have done them all but gutters. All these are hard work that involves skill and effort. Steve opened up his business in 1988 and has been in the business for over 25 years. That is pretty substantial if you ask me. Having that much experience in a trade is usually a direct correlation to expertise. I like the way your father went about it. Finding negatives in other companies is a great way to perfect yours. Working within the field for a while, learning all the short cuts, and then creating a company of your own is an extremely intelligent path for success. Steve worked for two other companies. A and S Construction and Alumabilt. I’m assuming both these companies tought him a great deal of knowledge in which he applied to his own company later. As you said, this is why he is so successful with his own company. “A success for my dad’s business is that the companies name is becoming bigger and more people know about it than they did 20 years ago.” Company expansion is never a bad thing. More clients equal a better company. I already knew, but found it interesting that the weather can dictate the success of a company. Customer satisfaction is very good way to think about the success of a company. Without satisfied customers no company will be successful.

  2. I really liked your power-point and it has many good points. It gets right to the point and easy to follow. It is really cool that your dad has been in the construction business for so long and it seems like he has a very successful business. The construction business is really hard because you do have the competition of other construction businesses and it is very hard to have work in the winter. I have family in the construction business and know how hard the construction industry can be and there is many layoffs in the winter due to lack of work because no one wants to build when there is snow on the ground. Your dad made a very good point that working for someone else in the same industry before opening up your own business is very intelligent. Not only can you see how they are doing things right and wrong and get advice but you will also know if you will actually enjoy your job. It also helps when starting your own business because it is a very good way to see what you want your business to be like. Another good point is to have everything planned out to the last detail before you actually get the business started. The advice to the class is very insightful. If you do not like what you do, then your business will definitely not work out and fail in the end. A lot of people pick something that they know involves making lots of money and then in the end they live a miserable life and do not enjoy what they do. I know I am all for making money but I also want to do something I enjoy in at the end of the day. I feel like a lot of the business owners people interviewed for the project gave the advice to do what you like and the money will come. Overall, very nice job on the powerpoint and very insightful.

  3. I really like the overall design of the presentation. Your dad seems like a very smart person, especially judging from the points he makes. what i liked the most however, where the two last slides, summarizing the obstacles and just the idea an entrepreneurship as a whole. I myself worked my whole last summer in construction and i know from personal experience how hard this business can be. It takes a lot of effort just to get a small business up and going, and it's even harder with a business such as Steve's since there is so much competition out there.
I really liked how he points out that relying on your old customers for spreading the good word is the key. I think that is a key factor for companies that don't really advertise as much. Your father's company, jusging from this presentation only relys on the word of mouth for new customers, and since Steve has been succesful for all these years, i think it is definitly a success for him. In my opinion, an investment in marketing would cost him some money at first, but in the long run would definitly benefit him, as new customers would be interested in his services. This business is also very hard to sustain due to the fact that weather plays a big role in it. If it's snowing or raining, it's usually pointless, and dangerous to do this kind of work, and as i know from personal experience, i bet your dad sometimes has these unexpected vacations as well because of the "weather limits".
I think your presenation could use a couple of pictures of the business. It would add some overall value to it. However, just the way it is, i think you did a great job with this interview, and once again the key points are covered and some really important facts are well stated in it. Hopefully Steve continues to be succesfull down the road, and his business will strive, even though we are currently living in a really tough economy. Good job.

  4. This PowerPoint is really well set up. The picture in the background really goes well with what your dad does. That’s really good that your dads company is still popular today that has to mean he knows what he’s doing and he’s good at it. Your dad did what my father did he started working for a company then he opened up his own business. I thought that was pretty cool that both our dads did the same thing. He’s been in business for a very long time as well which looks really good for him when he needs to make business deals. Just because when people look at his background they can see he’s been in business for 25 years so people will like that about him and that will help him get more customers. The competition will always be a challenge when you have a business no matter where you have your business or whatever it is people will always want to compete with you. Bad weather does cause a lot of struggle because you can’t really work on it a building when it’s snowing or raining. I agree with your dad because you cant start a business if you don’t know anything because then it would be really hard to start it and keep it going. I really like your PowerPoint and I did find interesting facts.
