McDonalds

Everyone knows the famous fast food restaurant of McDonald's. McDonald's is known around the world, having restaurants in over 100 countries and serves over 68 million people a day. The first restaurant opened up in May 15, 1940 in California. The McDonald's corporation was founded by Ray Kroc. McDonald's is a huge corporation, and with a huge corporate comes the good and the bad. McDonald has faced its problems, and its fair share of opportunities. In the movie produced by CNBC, Big Mac: Inside the McDonald’s Empire, CNBC goes inside how McDonald's runs its corporations and the problems they have faced, and the opportunities they take advantage of.

Opportunities:

  • Marketing
    • Marketing plays a very big role on how successful McDonald's is today. Marketing is a very big opportunity in any business but at McDonald's that consists of commercials, advertising, promotions, and how the food looks. Ronald McDonald is the mascot of McDonald's and one of the most recognized characters and has been looked at like a second Santa Claus to little kids. There are the famous commercials of Ronald McDonald with a bunch of kids or the famous "I'm lovin it" commercials. There has been more commercials promoting the healthier food offered at McDonald's where more moms are taking their kids to McDonald's for lunch or dinner because there is the healthy option. The Happy Meal is another marketing tool targeting kids because it fits their portion size, and comes with a toy. The mom in the CNBC movie told the cameras that she takes her son to McDonald's twice a week because her son begs and screams at her to take him to get a happy meal; and he also wants the new toy that comes out. McDonald's is always coming out with new toys to be put in the happy meal.

  • Making a career out of McDonald's
    • Tyrone Davis, a manager at a restaurant in the movie talks about how he started off at the bottom, and worked his way up the corporate ladder. Everyone has started at the bottom at any business and worked their way up and even at McDonald's, people can make a career out of it.
  • Culinary
    • In the movie, Chef Dan Coudreaut was the top of his class at the Culinary Institute of America and working for McDonald's after leaving the Four Seasons Hotel. Many people do not believe that there is a culinary part to McDonald's but Chef Dan believes in new innovations: new food and new spices. He came up with the snack wrap and salads. He also added the gourmet coffee and late line. Adding affordable coffee to the menu takes customers away from Starbucks and Dunkin Dounuts. No one takes a chef serious working at McDonald's. Everyone thinks Chef Dan is crazy for leaving the prestige Four Seasons Hotel.

Problems:

  • Two CEOs dying within a short period of time
  • Obesity

  1. Erin,
I like how you designed your blog layout. It looks really nice with pictures and with the video. I like how you started off stating the basics about McDonald’s. I agree that marketing does play a very big role for McDonald’s. Marketing is the reason they are so popular worldwide. I like that fact you included that Ronald McDonald is second to Santa Claus as one of the most recognizable characters for little kids. I find that fact to be very sad and it shows our country’s true colors. Chef Dan is a great guy trying to help McDonald’s and its healthy habits. But McDonald’s will always be known for their tasty but unhealthy burgers. It’s nice to see them try to come up with new innovations to go healthy but it is not them. At least they are trying unlike many other fast food restaurants. Great blog, nice visuals and good job separating all your main points.

  3. Erin,
Very nice organizational skills used in this blog. I love the way you started out by giving the readers a brief overview of the history of McDonalds and just how popular the name and franchise is. Although this was a blog, you still used transition sentences to guide readers to your next point. The only thing I would like to see in your opening paragraph is possibly a link that shows a list of the different McDonalds restaurants in the world, rather than just saying there is over a hundred. Another thing I liked about this blog is you constantly referred to the documentary watched in class, and not only did you refer to it, but you also provided a link so that readers can view it themselves.
I agree that marketing plays an important role in the success of this franchise, and if I had any doubt, this blog definitely took them away. The use of that Youtube video as a visual aid to what you were talking about really paid off. You stated it in writing and backed it up with pictures and video... Excellent blog, only critic is that it could have used a bit more information.

  4. I loved the visuals used in this blog. I love the way you started out by giving the readers a history of McDonalds and how well-known it is. Although this was a blog, you made it seem like you were writing a paper and it flowed very nicely. Another thing I liked about this blog was that you knew what you were talking about and it seemed like you enjoyed learning about the McDonalds franchise.
I agree that “marketing plays an important role in the success of this franchise” because without that no one would know about the restaurant and the deals they have to offer. The use of that Youtube video as a visual aid to what you were talking about really paid off and helped me understand more. You stated your thoughts in writing and backed it up with pictures and video. Amazing blog I really enjoyed reading it.
