McDonalds

McDonald’s is a multibillion dollar business, brings in about 21 billion dollars in revenue a year. It’s hard to believe that something that had started out as a small burger joint in Illinois, http://www.roadsideamerica.com/story/11370 turned out to be such a successful and important part to the United States financial community. In its early years McDonalds only served small one piece patties burgers; it’s very similar to the ones served when ordering kids meals.

One of the biggest things that I found to be interesting is that there isn’t necessarily one person who runs McDonalds, what I mean by this is that I never knew that someone could open up a restaurant as their own and use the name of McDonalds. There is a lot of advertisement and planning that comes with the management of the McDonalds business. For example, McDonalds has researchers specifically assigned to do research and find a location that would draw in customers. For example interstate 95 was mentioned in this documentary which is one of the busiest stretches of road in the Country. Have you ever noticed the amount of McDonalds fast food restaurants located in the highway opposed to other fast food restaurants like Wendy’s or burger thing.
Owning a McDonalds store could be very beneficial, it is said that a McDonald’s manager may earn up to 100,000 dollars or more a year. If you think about it, there will always be a demand for fast food in our Country and sometimes with our economy going down the drain, some people want to eat there stress away. Another really interesting thing that I found out about McDonalds while watching this documentary is the fact that there is so much work involved in the development of new flavors and foods for the McDonalds stores. There is actually an intense taste test that each new recipe must go through before they make it to the menu ad open for the public’s consumption.

Although this franchise is really successful, there is a lot of scrutiny about the health benefits of the food served. The health department claims a big part of McDonald’s success is burgers and fries which is not healthy for the public. But McDonald’s officials have found a way to cope with that by implementing salads and fruits to the menu.

  1. Mario,
I completely agree on your point that a lot goes into advertising. It takes a lot of work, and creative ideas to create new advertisements and commercials. Another great idea you had was that it is surprising that there is a culinary aspect to it without a chef that graduated from the top of his class at the Culinary Institute of America. Having a culinary taste testing would not be expected from McDonald's which is mostly burgers and fries. I would have liked to see more problems that McDonald's have faced and expanded on how McDonald's is known how to make people fat. I do not believe McDonald's should be blamed for people becoming obese. Its the persons responsibility for their own diet, and as long as you go to McDonald's in moderation, people would not get obese. I love the fact that McDonald's now have healthy menu options like the fruit and walnut salad, or apples.
