Big Mac: Inside the McDonald’s Empire, discuss the key challenges and opportunities that you think McDonald’s faces.

After watching the video clip on McDonalds I've realised how the company is trying to change around all the bad food and try to make things healthier. But what I don't get is that since it's a fast food restaurant that mainly sells burgers and fries then why do they care about all the other foods? People are still going to come and get food from their restaurants because that's what they advertise, so if they advertise the burgers and fries more then that's basically what they are going to be selling more of. I am an employee at Burger King and where I work there is a McDonalds right across the street, most days that I work I notice that there are more custmers at McDonalds than Burger King.

In the video that we watched in class it clearly shows that the owners of McDonalds are trying too hard to show the world that they have healthier food now, well at least that's what I think. What's the healthier food going to really do if people aren't interested in really buying it because they just want a burger and fries. Obviously there are people who buy apples and salads but I don't think there is enough of those people in the average everyday world. If there was, then McDonalds would have been selling those items more and then it wouldn't just be known for burgers and fries. But no one can tell what McDonalds wil be like in a few years and what it's going to come up with next.

Remember back in when we covered chapter 1 and we learned that the deffinition of success is, "success in business is often based on the strategy of finding a need and filling it," well this really explains McDonalds. When the owner of the little hamburger stand back in the days opened he found that people like to get fast food and cheap, and that is how the business grew. Also in chapter one we learned what the definition of business was, any activity that seeks to provide goods and services to others while operating at a profit. This is exactly what McDonalds does. It sells thousands and thousands of food particles a day and they make a big profit out of everything they sell. So McDonalds can go two ways, it can be all hamburgers and fries, or it could go healthy and try to sell a lot of their new foods.

  1. Your response was very thoughtful and I agree with the direction that you think McDonalds is going. They do have to start making healthier food if they really want to combat the obesity problem in America. With an unprecedented number of obese people they really need to work on their health if they want to be leading in the fight against obesity. Also, I thought it was very interesting how you worked in what we learned from chapter one. This was a very interesting idea of working in the basics of business. Also, I agree that McDonalds is a constantly growing and constantly evolving business so what they will be doing in five years or ten years or even twenty years is probably already in the works in the minds of somebody inside the Mcdonalds Corporation. They need to look far into the future in order for them to have a chance at surviving. You had a very well written and very interesting article and I think you did a very good job.
